Report from Environmental Committee (2008 - 2010)

Riding on the success of the “One Tonne Challenge” Project, Zontians continue their efforts to reduce green house gas emission both at work and at home. These include simple actions such as do not leave electric appliances (e.g. computer and AV system) running on stand-by mode and unplugging appliances when they are not in use to always bringing your own environmental friendly shopper bags versus using plastic bags from supermarkets. The estimated combined effect of these actions by Zontians could amount to a reduction of carbon dioxide by as much as 50 tonnes annually.
Other highlights of Zontians efforts on environment initiatives include regular participation in the One Tonne Challenge Carnivals at Star Ferry Pier on Sundays to support organic farming and in partnership with Kadorie Farm & Botanic Garden and the Tai Po Environmental Association, the publication of the book “One Tonne Challenge @ LOHAS” (噸噸愛地球樂活篇) which promotes healthy lifestyle and sustainability.

To combat climate change, we joined force with Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden and
the Tai Po Environmental Association to support the " One Tonne Challenge" program
and pledged to cut down carbon dioxide emission by 60 tons per annum. This project
was launched in July at the Star Ferry pier with the Director of Environmental
Protection as the officiating guest. In addition, we had invited speakers from Kadoorie
Farm & Botanic Garden and Tai Po Environmental Associations to share with us on
various ideas on how to achieve this carbon dioxide reduction target. In summary, this
reduction target can be achieved through changing our living habits to reduce
consumption of electricity, reduce waste and by using green products. As part of this
initiative, we had reinforced the habit of "Bring your own bag" (BYOB) for shopping
by distributing "Zonta-nt" environmental friendly bags to our members and their guests
at our 25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner.

the Environmental Campaign Committee and the Environmental Protection Department
of the HKSAR in 2004/05. Participants attended two half-day training workshops
and visited environmental facilities or nature reserve. Z Club members were
also required to carry out environmental projects .
In 2004/05 a total of thirteen Z Club members from Yau Tse Tin Secondary School
were awarded certificates for their achievement and participation.
Topics covered in the Training Programme included Global and Regional Issues on Air Pollution, Marine Conservation, Overview of Waste Problem and Solution, Environmental Consideration in Sustainable Development, Marine Conservation and Native Tree PLanting.,Noise Pollution, Organic Farming and Green Consumerism and Renewable Energy.

We have supported two major environmental projects this biennium.
Waste Separation Scheme in Pre-schools:
To enhance pre-school children's understanding of the importance of conserving resources and the concepts of waste reduction, separation and recycling, the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC), Education Department (ED) (merged with the Education and Manpower Bureau since 1 January 2003) and Environmental Protection Department (EPD) have co-organized the "Waste Separation Scheme in Pre-schools". Our club has provided a sponsorship of $150,000 to the Scheme to produce waste separation bin models for all pre-schools to teach students about waste reduction, separation and recycling. These bin models were delivered to schools in early 2003. They are well liked by pre-school teachers, as they are very useful tools for demonstration and teaching about waste separation.
Besides the waste separation bin models, the participating schools of the "Waste Separation Scheme in Pre-schools" will receive more environmental educational materials later on for enhancing the pre-school teachers' knowledge about waste reduction, separation and recycling. These educational materials include the "Environmental Green Treasury Box" that consists of a number of interesting teaching kits, the "Waste Separation Game for Pre-schools", the "Waste Management Game for Pre-schools" and the "Waste Separation Demonstration Kit for Pre-school".
Z-Clubs Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme
